Good Question... It has been such a whirlwind over the last 48 hrs. Remember the following events take place 5 weeks and 5 days before Jill's scheduled due date. Duh Duh (my best law and order sound effects)
It all started early Wednesday morning with Jill having very minor issues in which she called her OB office with her concerns. The nurse said, "It sounds like a UTI (Urinary Track Infection). Just go down to the local drugstore and pick up some antibiotics and you should feel better in a couple of days." So Jill and I went RiteAid and picked up the meds with some Cranberry Juice. By about 2pm that afternoon Jill started having a little cramping. She kinda kept it to herself. By about 3ish she told me about the cramping and said that it was coming and going.... I started to think to myself, "Cramping, coming and going and you are 8 months prego, maybe we should check it out."
So I told Jill to call the OB office and they asked a few more questions and they thought it was still a UTI. I told them that we were coming down there to have it check out just in case. The reluctantly said, "we will work you in". We head down to the OB office and get there around 4ish. So we waited about and hour and over the course of that hour I could tell Jill was a little uncomfortable and she told me she had a dull pain in her lower back. We are still thinking UTI.
Finally after that hour they call her back. The nurse decided to do a test to determine if it was a UTI. She went to do the test and right before she went to swab, she said, "let me go get something". She came back with the Dr. I said, "oops, somethings up".
The doctor said with out hesitation, "YOU'RE IN LABOR". In unison Jill and I said, "WHAT?" He said the "Baby was already crowned, about 7 to 8 cm dilated"
Let me remind you that Jill's water had never broke (or at lease like you see in the movies) and she only had mild to little cramping.
So next thing I see is 3 nurses run in with a wheel chair the Doctor frantically on the phone with the hospital and two distraught soon to be parents in tears trying to make some since of what is going on. Luckily the hospital is just across the street via a crosswalk and we hurry (The nurses are running pushing Jill cause they thought that she was going to give birth before she even got over there) over to the OB wing of Baptist Hospital.
We get over there in 2 1/2 min flat. We are met by a team of about 7 nurses and an emergency OB Doctor. They begin to prep her for C-Section (This was established back early in the pregnancy that she would need a section). Just remember this. 6 minutes before this, we thought it was a UTI. They gave her some some medication to stop the cramps, I mean contractions and we waited for a OR to be prepped to preform the section.
By this time I had to (not that wanted to) excepted what was going on and that i had to be the backbone for my wife. Jill of course was scared and overwhelmed by the events but she eventually calmed down and focused on staying calm.
Once the Dr. said she's fine and Jill started to feel less cramps, i mean contractions i walked out into the hall and made a few phone calls. Those phone conversations when the same way. Kinda like --- Jill's in Labor --- What? --- Jill's in labor, we are at Baptist --- CLICK.
Dave arrived with a big grin on his face with concern in his eyes in 5 min flat. I told him "She's alright but scared". He said, "Me Too". I went back to Jill and kept her calm for another 3o min or so. Eventually Dave and Sharon made it back to the prep room and we were able to crack a few jokes about tax credits and Christmas babies but we were still all scared.
An hour and 15 min passed from the "You're in labor" comment... I dawned to ole scrubs and watched my little girl being born. Then I heard the most beautiful sound I have heard, a faint cry. The team did a little sucking and must have un-corked her cause she was crying like a champ. Jill was soooo overwhelmed with emotion and love.
I will update you soon on how Mom and Emery is doing. Until Next time..
